Wungnema House

The historic Wungnema House was built on the outskirts of Carson City shortly after WWII and now sits on the east edge of Mills Park across the street from Carson High School.

Burton Wungnema, with the help of his father Earnest and wife Pearl, used the stone from his father's fourteen quarries in Brunswick Canyon to build the house for his family. Pearl raised eight children in the home. The Wungnemas were Hopi Indians and the name “Wungnema” means “to grow,” as in crops such as corn.

Today, the historic Wungnema House is under the jurisdiction of the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department and is maintained by the Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation through a lease agreement with the city. The 1000 square foot building is noted for its tranquil setting and is periodically open to the public for special events.

The Wungnema House is also available to rent for meetings and other events, subject to approval by the Foundation. Occupancy is limited to 20 people and deposit charges may apply.
