On June 27, 2018, the Sonoma Park dog fountain was officially opened. The fountain and previous improvements to dog watering facilities in Fuji Park were underwritten by the Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation, using funds entrusted to its care by the former Paws 4 Parks organization.

The fulfillment of this project was the result of collaborative efforts among the Board of Supervisors, the Parks 4 Paws organization, the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department, and residents to prioritize dog-park related projects. The Foundation polled dog park users and the responses overwhelmingly favored those projects improving existing access to water for dogs. Today, the fountain is utilized by the hundreds of dog-lovers that frequent Sonoma Park.

In addition to the fountain, the Foundation underwrote hardware costs to install self-closing gates at each of the five entrances to Sonoma Park to safe-guard against dogs escaping unattended into streets.
